Job Purpose:

The Work After First Hearing (WAFH) Social Worker plays a vital role in supporting children and families post-initial court hearings in public law proceedings. This role involves conducting thorough assessments, implementing care plans, and ensuring that children's best interests remain at the forefront of decision-making. The Social Worker will work collaboratively with families, legal representatives, and other professionals to achieve positive outcomes for children.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a caseload of children and families involved in care proceedings, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and court timelines.
  • Undertake in-depth assessments, including parenting capacity and risk assessments, to inform court decisions.
  • Prepare and present high-quality court reports, statements, and evidence as required.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor care plans for children, ensuring their needs are met within statutory guidelines.
  • Work closely with guardians, legal representatives, and other agencies, including health, education, and housing services, to ensure a multi-agency approach to safeguarding.
  • Attend and contribute to court hearings, case conferences, and planning meetings as required.
  • Engage with children and families to provide support, guidance, and intervention tailored to their circumstances.
  • Ensure that the voice of the child is central to all decision-making and that their wishes and feelings are considered throughout the process.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date case records in line with local authority and legal requirements.
  • Adhere to relevant legislation, including the Children Act 1989 and 2004, Care Planning, Placement and Case Review Regulations, and Public Law Outline (PLO) requirements.
  • Participate in regular supervision, team meetings, and professional development opportunities.

    • Person Specification:

    Essential Criteria:

  • Social Work degree or equivalent qualification (e.g., Diploma in Social Work, CQSW).
  • Registration with Social Work England.
  • Experience of working within child protection and care proceedings.
  • Strong knowledge of legislation, policies, and procedures relating to child safeguarding and public law.
  • Ability to manage complex cases and competing demands effectively.
  • Excellent report writing, assessment, and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work with children, families, and multi-agency professionals.
  • Commitment to anti-discriminatory practice and promoting equality.
  • Ability to travel to various locations as required.

    • Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience in court work, including giving evidence in care proceedings.
  • Additional training or qualifications in child protection or family court work.
